Extreme Survival

by Ron Tagliapietra

Ron Tagliapietra recounts famous survival stories in his book, “Extreme Survival.” which contains fifteen tales of living through suffering. From surviving a car crash to surviving entrapment, he provides a no-holds-barred recapitulation of how these fifteen individuals—including himself—had beaten the odds.

For history buffs, you may have recognized some of these stories far and wide, as it includes the stories of John Colter, Captain James Riley, Hugh Glass, and many more. Many of these men have gone through traumatic events—from narrowly escaping the clutches of hostile Native Americans to surviving on plant roots and whatever they could forage.

As several of these events unfolded, it’s important to note that many of these survivors did not start alone. They had brought on some companions with them along the way. Still, due to unforeseen circumstances, they had either perished or had become severely injured due to the whole ordeal. Nevertheless, their stories and their perseverance are eternal.

One feature I appreciated from the book was how the author made it a point to avoid sugarcoating these traumatic events. As I sat down and read the stories of each chapter, I couldn’t help but feel like I was at the edge of my seat, waiting in anticipation for these people to survive as I flipped to the next page. This book contains specific details that are not for the faint of heart. Still, if you are willing to see the truth as a whole, you may be interested to read how sacrifices often beget survival.

The book also highlights each survivor’s most significant asset—whether it be their motivations, attributes, or choices in the face of danger. Regardless of their differences, they survived because of one quality: none of them panicked, and they kept a clear head during emergencies.

Overall, I highly recommend this book to people who have doubts about whether or not they can make it through the day. Each chapter offers an opportunity to allow each reader to grow as they reflect on each of the survivor’s ordeals. With patience and understanding, we, too, can not only become survivors but excellent thrivers.
