Fury Bound Book Review: Is the Sequel Worth the Hype?

Sable Sorensen returns to the Kingdom of Nocturna with Fury Bound, the highly anticipated sequel to the hit romantasy Dire Bound. This second installment in The Wolves of Ruin series throws readers right back into a war-torn world of deadly politics, fated mates, and the ongoing bloody feud between direwolves and the vampiric Siphons.

The story follows Meryn Cooper, who has, against all odds, inherited the Sturmfrost crown. However, her ascension is far from a fairy tale. The kingdom is splintering under the weight of generational lies, and Meryn finds herself facing distrust from the commoners, nobles, and the Bonded alike. Worse still, she is trapped by a cursed bracelet draining her immense power and transferring it directly to Alistair Brightbane, the sinister leader of the Siphons. Desperate to protect her younger sister, Saela, and save her kingdom from the brink of destruction, Meryn must rely on her bonded direwolf, Anassa, and Stark Therion—the brooding, dangerous Alpha she once loathed but whose unshakeable loyalty has become her greatest anchor.

The Positives

There is much to praise in Sorensen’s latest offering. The world-building expands beautifully, taking readers beyond the immediate survival elements of the first book and into a complex web of court intrigue and rebellion. The slow-burn, enemies-to-lovers dynamic between Meryn and Stark finally delivers the emotional and romantic payoff fans have been clamoring for. Additionally, the narrative is buoyed by entertaining side quests and the introduction of fantastic new characters like Lucien, who brings a refreshing dynamic to Meryn’s inner circle. The Deluxe Limited Edition specifically shines with its gorgeous exclusive cover art and bonus content, making it a beautiful addition to any collector’s shelf.

The Negatives

However, Fury Bound is not without its flaws. The pacing, particularly in the final third of the novel, feels noticeably rushed, as if the narrative is racing to set up the inevitable third book rather than letting the current conflicts breathe. Some readers may also find Meryn’s characterization frustrating this time around; her persistent stubbornness and occasional insensitivity toward her sister, Saela, can make her a difficult protagonist to root for. Furthermore, a few beloved secondary characters suffer from sidelined development—most notably Izabel, who goes from being a fierce warrior in the first book to feeling relegated to background administrative tasks.

Final Thoughts

Despite its pacing hiccups and minor character regressions, Fury Bound is an action-packed, jaw-dropping continuation that successfully raises the stakes. It delivers the perfect blend of dark magic, political maneuvering, and intoxicating romance that romantasy readers crave.
