How I Got Off That Tree Limb

by Dr. Gregory Harris

Born on January 6, 1960, to George and LaVenita Harris, author Dr. Gregory Bernard Harris recounts his life lessons in his book, “How I Got off the Tree Limb.”

Inspired by a phrase he learned back then, the author recounts what the phrase “Get off that limb” meant during his youth. One day during a revival meeting at his young age, he remembers his pastor saying, “Get off that limb.” Confused at this phrase, the pastor explained that for a person to get apple pie, you first need to get the apples off the tree.

This metaphor has become a recurring theme in his book. While a natural leader at heart, he knew that to get what he wanted, he must first value both hard work and the willingness to get off that limb. Additionally, he also emphasizes how the support of others can also make or break your success. Still, you must be willing to believe in yourself first. By striking the delicate balance of hard work, belief in oneself, and trusting the Lord—he knows there is nothing God can’t do.

That said, getting to a place of peace and understanding is not easy. After going through trials and multiple difficulties—the author knows that such challenges would be worth it. As you read this book, you’ll find that you are not alone in this endeavor. Whatever you decide to do, and however you want to do it—the first step you need to take is to first get off that limb.

There are also several golden lessons tucked in this handy guide, like learning the value of trust and dealing with personal tragedies. The author hopes that such experiences in his life would be able to inspire others to live their lives as honestly as possible. We are not devoid of mistakes, but we should still try to be the best we can be, regardless of how difficult life can be.
