Grandma’s Snowflakes: A Book About the Seasons, Nature and Family History
Every winter, Grandma would get us out, her white vinyl snowflakes.
“Just in case we don’t get real snow,” Grandma would say as she put us on display in all the windows of the house. But one year, Grandma left one of us out, stuck on the window all year! And oh my! The wonders we were told about when Grandma got us out again–other seasons, warm weather, swimming, ghosts and goblins, flowers, and flying wonders! And best of all, we learned about the family history.
The Moving Words Review
Juli Boaz Karr writes a fantastic story that lasts through the seasons in “Grandma’s Snowflakes: A Book About the Seasons, Nature and Family History.”
The story starts with Grandma, who has lived in the same house since she was younger. As she grew older, so did the house. Eventually, she gave birth to four boys, who grew up and started their own families. As the years flew by and winter came around, Grandma would always stick some vinyl snowflakes on her windows in the house.”
“Just in case we don’t get real snow,” she would say.
With that, the snowflakes stayed throughout winter until Easter. However, the story doesn’t end there. Sometimes Grandma would even forget to put the snowflakes away, and they’d stay stuck on the windows all year!
With the remaining snowflakes who managed to stay around all year, what tales and observations have they got to share? What happens outside when winter is over and why is learning the family history so important?
“Grandma’s Snowflakes” is a unique tale all on its own. Instead of reading stories through the eyes of children, animals, and people—we hear them from velvet snowflakes! Accompanying this unique narrative is a gorgeous illustration that shows and displays all the beauty these snowflakes have described yearlong. From the work of the birds to the changes in the seasons, it’s clear that “Grandma’s Snowflakes” have a lot more to share.
While the book may come across as a read for the winter, it helps children understand nature’s beauty and what each season has to offer. Additionally, it also touches on the themes of growing up. Much like the seasons changing, we, too, become older. If you are looking for a fun, creative, and unique book to share with kids—this read is a definite addition to any library.
