Looking back on his youth, author Brad Ryder can say two things seem to evade his understanding: women and his belief in God.
His problem has been penned, examined, and explored in his book, “Kissing McKayla: and other women who blessed my life.” Now at a mature stage in his life, he looks back on his relationships with perspective and appreciation—a feat few people have the talent to do.
Unlike many autobiographies, the author doesn’t shy away from his shortcomings. His pace and handling of prose shine through—showcasing his depth and honesty with hints of humor that anyone would gladly appreciate.
Another feature of the book I greatly enjoy is his little annotations here and there. While some authors may struggle with providing such details, the author does it with a style that leaves the reader curious and wanting to know more. His charm and personality shine through, which I have no doubt, had charmed countless people along the way throughout his youth before he settled with “the one.”
Nevertheless, the author provides excellent insight into what it means to be a boy who slowly turns into a man. While modern dating has undoubtedly replaced the woes of courtship, not much has changed in the dating scene. From awkward introductions, brief yet passionate flings, and the soul-crushing end of a relationship—such things don’t change even if society has become more modern. If anything, it’s comforting to know that while the world has changed, our dating struggles may not be all that different across generations.
With all these points in mind, I highly recommend this book to any young man who may struggle with understanding women, himself, and his supposed place in this world. Aside from young men, women can also benefit from his perspective on how the courtship process goes. If you require insight on how certain women can change a man’s life for the better while also discovering your pathway to God—this book is one for your shelves.
