Review – Deadly Decisions: A Natalie North Novel

by

Nancy Mangano

A fast-paced crime thriller introduces a sharp, conflicted private investigator whose hunger for real danger pulls her into a web of deception, obsession, and lethal intent.

Nancy Mangano’s Deadly Decisions opens with immediate tension and never fully releases its grip, presenting readers with a gritty, character-driven mystery set against the morally murky world of private investigations in Los Angeles. At its center is Natalie North, a capable yet restless PI who longs for serious criminal cases rather than routine adultery work. Her desire for something darker and more meaningful becomes the novel’s driving force—and its greatest source of peril.

Natalie is introduced as tough, observant, and psychologically astute, traits sharpened by her background in psychology and her upbringing under a former LAPD detective father. While she spends her days exposing infidelity, she yearns for felony-level investigations—murders, conspiracies, crimes with real stakes. That opportunity appears unexpectedly through a series of intersecting storylines involving a suspicious taxi driver, a wealthy and deeply dissatisfied wife, and multiple characters whose inner monologues reveal dangerous obsessions and violent fantasies.

The novel alternates points of view, allowing readers access to the minds of both investigators and potential perpetrators. This technique is effective in building suspense, particularly when the narrative explores characters who rationalize cruelty, resentment, or homicide as justified outcomes of betrayal or neglect. Mangano excels at portraying psychological instability and emotional decay, especially in characters whose outward privilege masks inner rot.

One of the book’s strengths lies in its dialogue-driven scenes and strong sense of place. The Los Angeles setting feels lived-in, from upscale Beverly Hills enclaves to grimier, everyday locations. Natalie’s interactions—with clients, suspects, and her own fractured family—add emotional texture and highlight the toll of a profession built on mistrust. The author also succeeds in crafting morally ambiguous characters, resisting easy heroes or villains.

Deadly Decisions is a compelling entry in the crime thriller genre, anchored by a strong female lead and an unflinching look at obsession, power, and moral compromise.
