Review – The Campfire Standard: A Novel Inspired by “Just Show Up”

by

Frank Castelli

In Castelli’s cinematic corporate thriller, an idealistic operations director battles a cold, algorithmic management culture to protect his team and honor a deep-seated legacy of personal accountability.

Francis Castle, a gritty native of the Bronx built on direct eye contact and unbreakable handshakes, steps into the Mid-Atlantic operations hub of Apex Quantum Logistics (AQL). The territory is a notorious corporate graveyard, currently ranking dead last across the global enterprise. Instantly, Senior Vice President Garrett Sterling—a ruthless executive who tracks fluid metrics and treats human beings as numeric nodes on a ledger—orders Francis to fire three underperforming field producers: Vance, Cross, and Boyd. Refusing to casually destroy livelihoods, Francis wagers his own financial compensation to shield his staff, implementing a leadership philosophy centered on “ennoblement over empowerment”. By asking deliberate, open-ended questions, Francis unearths their hidden, complementary talents: Marcus Vance’s brilliant proprietary routing matrix, Sharon Cross’s relationship-first client negotiation, and Rick Boyd’s high-velocity fleet execution. When catastrophic blizzards and remote network lockouts threaten temperature-sensitive medical payloads, Francis and his team must bypass bloodless protocols, invoke common sense overrides, and directly challenge the corporate machine to secure their own destiny.

Castelli successfully translates the core leadership tenets from his original non-fiction work, Just Show Up, into an engaging, high-stakes thriller format. The narrative thrives on its clear philosophical framework, introducing memorable principles like the “Triad of Action” and the “Campfire Standard”—an Eagle Scout rule demanding that every person, place, and project be left in a profoundly better state than when arrived. The inclusion of vivid, quasi-autobiographical flashbacks, such as childhood breakfast encounters with Norman Vincent Peale, adds welcome emotional weight and moral grounding to Francis’s current executive decisions.

An earnest, ideas-driven blend of corporate strategy and moral conviction that effectively champions human value over artificial metrics.
