Taylor Jenkins Reid writes a phenomenal book on aging Hollywood icon in her work, “The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo.”
Monique Grant, an unknown reporter for Vivant magazine, has been assigned to interview Hugo for the magazine. Hugo, who is auctioning off some of her famous gowns, hopes to raise money for a breast cancer charity. As the women meet, the former star reveals that she has no plans of giving an interview for Vivant Magazine. However, she does want Grant to write her life story, to which the reporter agrees, albeit with suspicion.
The story then sets off to Hugo recounting her life. By fourteen, she married her first husband, Ernie Diaz, to escape her abusive father and make it to the world of Hollywood. After catching a studio producer’s eye, Evelyn begins her career as an actress right after divorcing Diaz.
Evelyn learns quickly that the road to superstardom is less than ideal. Her career and personal life promptly take a toll when secret affairs, hidden sexualities, and Hollywood scandals are brought into the mix. With so many skeletons in her closet, Hugo’s biggest one may be closer to Monique than she realizes.
The book is inspired by Hollywood icons Elizabeth Taylor, Rita Hayworth, and Ava Gardner. Taylor Jenkins Reid writes a spellbinding story on Old Hollywood and its many buried scandals. With celebrity culture being more open than ever, Reid offers a gentle reminder that most of the stars in the past didn’t have that luxury and freedom.
Since its debut, “The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo” have received positive reviews. In 2017, it was nominated for a Goodreads Choice Award for Best Historical Fiction. Many translations have also been done for the print, including Spanish, Swedish, and French.
Possible Adaptations:
In 2019, Freeform and Fox 21 picked up the book’s rights for development. However, in 2021, Reid announced that the rights were no longer owned by the companies, which means production would be done on another platform.
As of March 2022, social media announced that The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo Netflix adaptation is in development with many possible actresses slated for the lead role.
So far, there has yet to be any news on production. Nevertheless, you can always wait for the movie by getting a copy of the book today!
