Depression is one of the most common yet misunderstood illnesses. In her book, “Will I Ever Be the Same Again? Transforming the Face of Depression & Anxiety,” the author discusses the illness and its many treatments. One treatment is known as Electroconvulsive Therapy, or ECT for short.
Despite living a charmed life with a successful husband, fantastic kids, and never having to struggle—the author is no exception from the disease that affected her life from the inside out. In her book, she describes depression as “The Beast” that slowly eats away her zest for life, robbing her of her joy almost as quickly as it came.
The book is divided into three parts. In the first part, the author describes her journey through depression and the steps she took to live in recovery. When the Beast came over and plagued her life, she nearly lost herself in its toxicity. Fortunately, the support from her family and an empathetic nurse at a mental health care facility convinced her that ECT may just be the solution for her.
After overcoming her prejudices about the treatment and seeing that medication didn’t do much, she finally took the plunge and underwent regular sessions.
In the second part, she discusses her Courageous Recovery Wellness Model, which is meant to guide readers on how to reach overall wellness. In the last and final part, she answers a few questions readers may have as she shares her journey eight years later.
The author provides excellent insight into the stigma that surrounds depression. While society has certainly improved since her diagnosis in the 90s, there are still myths surrounding the multiple treatments that involve this disease. One is ECT, which the media had demonized over the years. With a thorough description of her experience, the author successfully explores how safe and effective it can be.
With all these features in mind, I encourage anyone willing to learn about depression and ECT. Whether you are a sufferer of the disease, a concerned family member, or even a health care provider. The author relays valuable information that stays with you as you finish the final pages.
